Parking and Congestion Management

Parking

No one needs to remind you that it costs a lot of money to build and maintain even a modest surface parking lot. While surface parking lots cost substantially less than multi-story facilities, they can tie up precious land resources and limit expansion options later on. As members of the International Parking Institute (IPI), we know how important it is to consider all appropriate options when building or expanding employee parking facilities. According to the IPI, the average cost of building even basic surface parking is between $1,200 and $1,500 per space and multi-story parking garages cost an average of $11,315 per space. Additionally, ongoing maintenance and operating expenses typically contribute over $800 per space per year to the cost of providing parking for employees.

Even a relatively modest vanpool program can significantly reduce your company's employee parking requirements. A vanpool program of only ten vehicles can reduce your employee parking needs by as many as 140 spaces. Employers with active vanpool programs save millions of dollars in parking construction and operating expenses and give themselves the latitude to use scarce land resources for future expansion or other more important applications.

Congestion

Clogging the local infrastructure leading into and out of your facility is bad for the company's image, aggravates neighbors and causes costly delays in getting employees to work. We've all seen the data on the billions of dollars lost each year when our employees sit in traffic jams. The Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) estimates that congestion is costing Americans more than $78 billion a year and the typical urban commuter is delayed in rush hour traffic nearly 40 hours a year. Previously the exclusive domain of major cities, today traffic congestion affects almost all of us. Indeed, the TTI publishes an annual Urban Mobility Report which catalogs the economic consequences of rapidly increasing traffic congestion in our nation's small and medium sized cities.

Supporting a vanpooling program for your employees visibly demonstrates your company's commitment to reducing traffic congestion on our nation's roadways as well as into and around your facility. We can even put your logo and/or environmental message on vanpools traveling to your location. In secured facilities like military installations, vanpools help reduce the volume of vehicles passing through security checkpoints and the frustrating delays that can result from backups at controlled access points.
